Amsterdam er en flott by - iallfall når det ikke regner. Både i går og idag har det regnet midt på dagen - med tordenvær. Begge dager har jeg gått ut med de andre iført regnjakke, og uten å ta med meg solbriller. Begge dager har endret seg brått til varme og sol så snart vi har tar gratisferjen over kanalen og jeg har drasset rundt på en varm jakke og myste meg fram i det skarpe lyset. Jentene og gutta skilte lag i dag - jentene skulle på massasje, lunsj og handletur, mens gutta skulle på vitenskapsmuseet. Museet var stengt pga. oppussing og gjenåpner først i 2009, så ble det heller en lengre lunsj og vandring i de mange koselige gatene for oss. Litt småhandling ble det på meg faktisk - noen verktøy og et blybelte og sokker til våtdrakten. Det virker som at alle nyter livet i Amsterdam - kafeene og restaurantene har godt belegg, og de 'kaffetørste' finner sikkert det de vil ha på byens utallige "coffee shops" som sikkert vil få et problem hvis røyking blir forbudt innendørs på lik linje med Norge og England. Man kan egentlig underholde seg selv bare ved å  tusle rundt og se på livet.

 

Amsterdam is a super city - at least when it is not raining. Both today and yesterday there were heavy thundery showers in the middle of the day. Both days we left for the free ferry to the city centre while it was still raining - taking my waterproof sailing jacket with me and leaving sunglasses behind. On both days it has stopped raining as we get to the other side of the canal and I have ended up baking in the sun carrying my jacket round with me and being blinded by the strong light. The girls and boys went their separate ways today. The girls seemed intent on massage, lunch and shopping, whereas we boys planned to visit the science museum. Having walked a long way to the museum we found that it is closed for refurbishment, opening in 2009! So we compensated with a good lunch instead and wandered the many streets and canals on the look out for things of interest. Everyone seems to enjoy life in Amsterdam. The cafés and restaurants seem to do a good trade, and those with a thirst for coffee have a huge selection of "Coffee shops" to choose from. I don't think that the smoking laws here are as strict as in Norway or the newly imposed rules in England, but these places will surely have a problem if similar non-smoking laws are introduced in Holland. There is enough entertainment just walking around this fantastic and historic city observing life go by.
