Med enden på turen i sikte var det egentlig litt synd at vi måtte kjøre motor pga. manglende vind. Det var spådd vind, men den kom ikke før rundt soloppgangen i dag - og godt aktenfra slik at motorseiling ikke ble en spesielt god løsning. Vi fikk da litt nytte ut av vinden, og med motoren på en behagelig 1400 omdreininger kunne vi glede oss over en fart på seks knop. Etterhvert kom vinden og vi har nå seilt med spridde seil siden halv ni i morges uten motordur. Farten har vært bra, i overkant av seks knop som i seg selv sier en ankomst på Azorene ca. ti-tiden (UTC, som også er Azorene-tid) i kveld, rundt skumringen med andre ord. Vi skulle ha avsluttet med spinnakerseilas, men med fortsatt låst autopilot er dette litt risikabelt i 15 knops bris. Jeg gjorde et forsøk på å koble inn instrumentene igjen i håpet på at en dårlig kontakt hadde blitt bedre etter at jeg hadde sjekket kablingen bak instrumentene. Dette resulterte i de samme alarmene og piping fra autopilotens kontrollenhet og GPS'en - heldigvis uten at autopiloten sluttet å styre. Så vi styrer fortsatt uten instrumenter og kursendringer foretas ved å flytte på tape som holder fluksgate-kompasset provisorisk på plass.

 

Som siste dag på reisen blir det litt bedre mat enn vanlig - vi hadde både egg og bacon igjen som ble til en skikkelig avslutningsfrokost. Isbiter er satt i fryserboksen samt hvitvin og øl i kjøleskapet. Jeg klarte ikke å finne tonic men vil bruke noen timer i ettermiddag til å endevende båten på jakt etter en flaske eller to. Gjesteflagget og "Q"-flagget er på plass under salingen og det beste av de to norske flaggene våre er tilbake på flaggstanga på hekken. Disse falmer fort i den sterke sola - derfor har vi ett til havnebruk (den peneste) og ett til bruk på sjøen. Forhåpentligvis får vi et nytt flaug med mannskapet vårt, Reidar og Thorstein, som kommer til Azorene om fjorten dager.

 

 

With the end of the passage in sight we were disapointed to have to use the motor yesterday due to the lack of wind. Wind was forecast but it didn't make an entry until sunrise this morning. We motor-sailed with it for a few hours making six knots with the motor running at a pleasant 1400 revs. The wind built steadily and after a celebratory last breakfast of egg, bacon and beans, we poled out the genoa, let the main go wide on the beam, and turned the motor off. Finally - sailing at over six knots straight towards Horta on the last day - a great way to round off the trip. We reckon on arriving at about 22:00 UTC (which is also 22 Azores time) - just as it is getting dark. IT would have been nicer to round off the trip by sailing with the spinnaker for the last hours, but with the autopilot still locked this seems a bit of a risky project in the 15 knot breeze. I had an attempt at connecting the instruments again, hoping that my check of all the connectors may have solved the problem. However no sooner had the instruments come on than the alarms started going again and we had to disconnect again. Fortunately the autopilot seemed oblivious of all the commotion the other instruments are making and carried on steering throughout. So we are still steering by moving pieces of duct tape around to realign the fluxgate compass.

 

We have done a few of the necessary preparations for getting into harbour - the courtesy flag and "Q" flag are flying, ice cubes are being made in the freezer and a six-pack of beer is in the fridge. I failed to find tonic water, though I'm sure we have some somewhere - I'll spend a couple of hours this afternoon turning the boat upside down on a hunt for them. We have also changed our ensign to the less faded of the two. We like to wear a reasonably presentable ensign in harbour, but at sea we wear the old faded one. They fade quickly in the strong sunlight, but hopefully we will get a new one brought out by our crew for the next leg Reidar and Thorstein.
