På turen vår i går kjøpte vi vin som er produsert i området ved Lymington og kjempestore hvitløk som dyrkes på Isle of Wight. Dette sammen med gode oster og portvin til dessert ble til en fin middag ombord - som vi kunne innta i cockpiten med nydelig kveldssol. Det ble en fin avslutning på besøket fra Molly og Keith. Vi avtalte med båtene som lå utenfor oss at vi ville reise halv-ni, og de var parat til oppgaven til den tiden.

 

Med en tur på snaue seksti sjømil til Brighton, kunne vi ikke klare hele turen innen en seks-timers periode med tidevannet med oss. Vi fikk da mye motstrøm i turen vår gjennom The Solent, så det var bra at vinden var forholdsvis frisk slik at det ble iallfall brukbar fremdrift. Det er fint å seile på The Solent - beskyttet farvann, utrolig mange andre seilbåter ute, og land på begge side som er til dels ganske så pent. Her må man passe seg for andre båter og spesielt større lasteskip som er på vei inn og ut av de store havnene her som Portsmouth og Southampton. Når man kommer ut av The Solent, så forsvinner båtene og man har havet til seg selv og bare noen få likesinnede. Etter at strømmen snudde og vinden økte til liten kuling aktenfra, fikk vi bra fart - til tider over ti knop over grunnen, og turen til Brighton gikk unna atskillig fortere enn forventet - og vi rundet moloen til havnen kvart over seks. Vel fortøyd nå skal vi se oss lit omkring i byen og spise middag for siste gang i England på denne turen.

 

On our trip round the New Forest yesterday we stopped at a winery and bought (after considerable tasting) locally produced wine. We also bought a huge garlic, grown on the Isle of Wight, which together with bauguette, cheese and biscuits (and port!) made a very pleasant dinner which we ate on board in the cockpit in the evening sun. This made a fine end of the visit from Molly and Keith. We made an appointment with the boats rafted outside us that we would leave at eight thirty - they were ready at the agreed time and we were underway on the long (60 miles) sail up the Solent and English Channel to Brighton.

 

Being such a long trip, we couldn't do it all in one tide, so we had to accept that we would have the current against us for some of the journey. We took this penalty in the Solent in order to make an early departure. Fortunately we had a fresh wind so despite up to two knots of current against us, we made reasonable progress. The Solent is an interesting place to sail - flat water, lots to see ashore and loads of boats. One has to be careful with the larger ships too who are constantly coming and going to the larger ports like Southampton and Portsmouth. Leaving The Solent the boats disappear and one has the sea almost for onesself. After the tide turned and the current swept us along the coast, the wind picked up to a force 6 and we were romping along with deeply reefed sails yet making ten knots in the best surfs. We rounded the harbour breakwater at quarter past six. Now we are safely moored and are going into town to have a look around and to eat out for the last time on English soil on this trip.
