Etter den triste dagen i går var det deilig å våkne til blå himmel og en ikke altfor frisk bris. Det blåser fortsatt litt over gjennomsnittet for årstiden og vi valgte å droppe en tur ut på Tobago Cays. Underveis i dag hørte vi en kjent båt på VHF'en - "Kumari", og en rask samtale med dem bekreftet at det var for mye vind ute på Tobago Cays der de hadde ligget i natt. Vi valgte å sette kurs mot vest siden av Union Island til en flott bukt som heter Chatham Bay. Her fant vi god plass i en stor men godt beskyttet bukt i herlige omgivelser. Det er bratt på alle sider av bukta og det går ingen vei hit - kun en sti gjennom den tette skogen. Dermed er det ikke blitt til noe utviklet sted - kun en forholds primitiv gatekjøkken-lignende sted på stranda. Vi ligger godt her - i le for vinden bak fjellene, men det kommer noen fallvinder av og til. Vi har ankret opp i 5m vann over sand og ankeret har gravd seg godt ned. Her er det mye fisk i vannet. Stimer av småfisk blir jaget av større fisk og begge hopper ut av vannet av og til. Her er det da også dekket bord for forskjellige sjøfugler - inkludert noen flotte pelikaner som er et artig skue.

 

Vi har også snorklet i dag - igjen masse flotte fisker og koral-typer. Da vi kom var vi bare 7-8 båter, men det har strømmet til utover ettermiddagen og det er nå kanskje det dobbelte - men det er veldig god plass her, så ingen trengsel.

 

Siden vi ligger omkranset av forholdsvis høye fjell, har vi ikke mobildekning, så jeg må puste liv i satellittelefonen igjen i dag - dermed blir det kun et lite bilde av bukta som dagens bilde.

 

After the rather miserable weather yesterday we were relieved to awake to blue skies and a not too strong breeze. It is still blowing more than the average for the time of year and we decided to drop Tobago Cays again. While sailing round here we heard one of the boats we know - "Kumari" on the VHF and had a chat with them. They were at Tobago Cays and could confirm that the wind was too strong to make the snorkelling much fun and they would be heading in today. We chose to head round to the west coast of Union Island, to Chatham Bay. This is a spacious yet well protected bay and a truly beautiful anchorage. Surrounded on all sides by steep hills covered in forest, the place is quite a gem and unspoiled. Due to the steep hills there is no road to this bay, just a tortuous footpath. This means that the commercialization so often seen at other anchorages in the form of hotels, restaurants, shops etc hasn't come here (yet). There is just a primi    tive looking snack-bar on the beach - which is a pearl in itself. We are in the lee of the mountains and out of the wind, though there are the odd gusts from the mountainsides. We are anchored in 5m of water over sand with the anchor well dug in. There are a lot of fish in the water here - shoals of fry being hunted by bigger fish - both jumping out of the water at times. The sea birds like this too - there are even some pelicans here which are quite a sight.

 

We have snorkelled around the reef at the point of the bay - lots of fish and coral as usual. When we came in the morning there were only 7-8 boats here, but now this has doubled. The bay is very large though so things are not exactly crowded.

 

Being in its idyllic location away from the population and surrounded by hills means that there is no mobile phone coverage, so I have had to brush the dust off the old satellite phone - hence the rather meanly sized picture of the anchorage as today's picture.
