Etter at jeg sendte inn gårsdagens blog, reiste "Madame" og oss ut på den fem sjømil lange turen til Candás (N43:35.35 W005:45.53). Etter motorgang rundt industrihavnen i litt motsjø, kunne vi heise genoaen og nyte den korte turen til Candás, som tok litt under timen. Denne lille havneby har et hotell som dessverre ødelegger det ellers fine inntrykket av bygningene, og en god del butikker med bra utvalg av fersk fisk, kjøtt og bakervarer. Vi hadde en meget trivelig formiddags vandring rundt stedet og opp til et lite kappell og fyr på en klippe like ved. Dette var så forskjellig fra Frankrike. Arkitekturen er annerledes, det er mye grønnere her, folk spiser ikke frokost på kafé her og turistene er få og holder seg til strendene. Båtturismen eksisterer så å si ikke. Vi var innom byens største kirke som var litt uvanlig i sin utforming. Bak alteret var det en balkong, utsmykket med store veggmalerier, mange klokker, og statuer. Se bildet.

 

Havnen er merket på kartet med en dybde på 0,7m i den aller ytterste delen, og den innerste delen er tørr ved lavvann. Det er kanskje derfor ingen andre båter (utenom små lokale båter) ligger her. I pilotboka står det at man har 3,7m nær innløpet - men det stemmer heller ikke. Siden det var springflo var vi faktisk på grensen til å ligge for anker, og mye regning og blaing i tidevannstabeller måtte til før jeg var sikker på at vi ikke ville touche ned med kjølen. Da vi gikk og la oss, ca. en time før lavvann, hadde vi fortsatt 60cm under kjølen, og mine beregninger tilsa at det ville bli 30cm ved det laveste, så det skulle gå bra - og det gjorde det! Vi lå veldig godt og ble ikke forstyrret av musikk eller bråkete nabobåter som vi opplevde i Gijón.

 

Vi dro fra Candás litt før ett for å gå den korte turen til Luanca, der vi ankret opp for lunsj og en svømmetur - deilig. Her var det en nyere bebyggelse som så ut til å være mer feriehus. Sandstranden var tydeligvis hovedgrunnen til å kjøpe seg sommerbolig her, og det var mange som badet og solte seg på stranden. Selve havnen er litt utsatt for dønninger, og ville ikke være noe perfekt natthavn. Dermed bestemte vi oss for å reise de femten sjømil til den neste havnen - en "Ria" som heter Aviles. Litt industrielt, og pilotboka stemte ikke helt, men vi fant en flytebrygge som ikke så ut til å være i bruk av andre, og la oss der for natta.

 

 

After I sent yesterday's blog, we left Gijón for the five mile run to a small harbour and town along the coast. We motored against the wind to get roung the industrial harbour, but could then roll out the genoa and make good speed to Candás (N43:35.35 W005:45.53), doing the whole trip in just over the hour. This little harbour town has an hotel which rather detracts from the otherwise delightful old centre. A good selection of shops with lots of fresh fish, meats and bakery products. We spent a very pleasant morning strolling around, taking an espresso at a café and walking up to a tiny chapel and lighthouse on the cliff top by the town. This is very different from France - the architecture is different, things are much greener here, more hilly and cliffs, little tourism, people do not eat breakfast on the sidewalk cafés here. Boat tourism just doesn't exist. Perhaps because the maps show that the harbour only has 0.7m of water at low tide in the outermost part, and drying in the rest. My pilot book is marked 3.7m in the outer part, but this doesn't seem correct either. As there is a full moon, we could expect a pretty low tide, and after much checking of tables and calculations, we found that we would only have 30cm under the keel - a bit too little for my tastes, but we carefully followed the progress of the tide, and realized that these 30cm was a correct calculation. We lay very well here in fact and had a good night's sleep.For future reference if anyone reading this is planning to anchor here, change the 3.7m in the pilot book to 1.7m and you will be about right. Don't expect any disturbance from music or noisy neighbouring boats here - unlike Gijón! With well planned anchoring there is room for ten boats if the four innerst only draw 1.5m, or the tide is close to the neaps.

 

We visited the town's main church which was more catholic than the pope - acutally very beautiful with some most ornate altars, wall frescoes, clocks and statues. See the top picture.

 

We left Candás in late morning to go a couple of miles along the coast to Luanca, where we anchored for lunch and a swim which was most refreshing. Here the village is clearly new with many holiday property developments. The lovely beach is presumably the reason so many have made this their holiday place - a lot of people were there. The harbour is vulnerable to northerly swell, and while conditions were fine today, this is not a place to spend the night in anything other than near perfect conditions We moved on the 15 miles to a "Ria" round the promontory at Aviles. Rather industrial, and the pilot bood didn't seem quite up to date, but we found a floating pontoon where we were expecting to anchor - and no one seemed to use it, so we moored up there for the night.
