Having consulted the almanac, it was clear that the tides around Malin Head towards Rathlin Island were worthy of serious consideration somI set sail 0515 to get to a destination by 1530. It was to be either Coleraine or Portrush. Lifting bridges and a long way down a river led me to choose Portrush, although it is a holiday resort with fun fares etc. So be it.

After a short sail out of the river, the wind was on the nose once again, but even too light to warrant unfurling the Genoa. This was generally the theme for the day. sails were unfurled for the last few miles with a cracking F5 wind, which allowed me to sail close to the wind for an hour or so, before the wind was on the nose again.

I deployed the mackerel feathers and caught 5 in one go, but threw them all back, being really to small to eat. However I then caught a good size one for supper tonight, my first of the Irish cruise. The downside was a huge line tangle through the plastic spool breaking. Four hours later……..! - now all fixed with superglue and much untangling.

The photos were taken in murky conditions but show the mountainous, hilly countryside.

Looking back at Malin Head as I skimmed through a shallow inner passage with rocks to catch the unwary.

First sight of Portrush Harbour. Note the large wheel for screaming youngsters!
