A bit ho-hum

I’m pretty sure it’s Wednesday and all is very pleasant onboard Weyve.

Winds have been very light so poodling along at 3-4 knots which at first bothered us a bit until we came to realise that it matters not how long we take to get to Madeira and to chill out and enjoy the experience of the journey as well , so the mood has changed drastically here in ‘mid-atlantic’ to a much more relaxed and slooow pace. With the Hydrovane doing all the work we just amble about looking for something to do.

We have eased down on the watch system and have split the night watch to me from 20:00 to 02:00 and Janet from 02:00 to 08:00 and then just grab a few hours each during the day as needed. This works well because Jan can sleep at anytime and staying up late is no problem for me.

Before we left Plymouth we bought all the fishing gear we needed from a nice man in a fishing shop. I was a bit surprised at the size of the lure he recommended – if it had been a real fish it wouldn’t have fitted in the fridge !

Anyway , over the back it went this morning , 200m behind the boat , and we waited .

It didn’t take long before I got bored and started reeling it in which was pretty hard work but I assumed that was all the drag on the lure , but wait , as the line came in I saw a splash of iridescent  green . I HAD A FISH ON !!

I immediately identified it as a Dorado but was a little disappointed as it hadn’t put up much fight and they have a fearsome reputation.  As it got nearer I began to understand why it came in so easy , it was coming backwards . It was either a fish with strange eating habits or was dead cocky and showing off.

Decent size fish as well. About 2-3 kilo , enough for Janet and I but certainly not big enough to swallow the lure .

All was revealed as it came out the water , I hadn’t caught it – I’d speared it through the side . I’m guessing it must have been investigating the bait as I started hauling in. Anyway , as it came in it jumped off the hook and swam away.

Janet’s solved here weight loss/ weight gain conundrum . She now stands on the scales ( off the carpet ) which obviously swing about madly about between  4st 3lbs and 14st 2 lbs as the boat rocks .As a number flashes by that she likes she chooses that one . Simple . One happy Janet who has now found a diet that suits her.
