After exploring the coast of St Lucia we returned
to Rodney Bay to see in the New Year. We spent New Year's Eve at Spinnakers
restaurant on Redruit Beach, where the food, band, atmosphere, drinks, and
fireworks from the adjacent hotels were all excellent. All crew returned to the
yacht well into the first morning of 2011 - some after swimming in the marina
Swimming Pool.
On 1 January, Simon decided that the weather was
too warm for him, so he flew back to sunny Scotland; and Will took the ferry to
Dominica to do some backpacking. This left Chris, Alex and myself with
Starcross. With only three people on board, and the trade winds generally
more northerly than normal we decided that we did not fancy the prospect of a
long beat back from the Grenadines, and therefore we have decided to cruise
Martinique until our families and Ross come out to St Lucia later this month.
The Grenadines will have to be covered in some future trip.
So after a few days of pottering in Rodney Bay,
cleaning, assisting some neighbours with tasks on boats, drinking some of their
nice coffee and playing like/with their children in the pool, we set sail
north to Martinique.
We are currently berthed in the huge Marin Marina,
and have spent today shopping in the French Supermarkets, hunting decent bread
and cheese, and snorkling on the reefs in the harbour entrance. The harbour is
one of the best hurricane holes in the Caribbean - the downside of this is it is
extremely hot and sticky, as when there is only a light wind blowing none of it
reaches the marina.
Tomorrow - Chris' birthday - we plan to sail around
to the capital Fort de France.
We trust that all is well back home, and wish
everyone fair winds and less snow for the New Year,
Al, Alex and Chris
