Goodbye New Zealand
The last couple of weeks have been a flurry of servicing, maintenance, cleaning, shopping and cooking passage meals. We’ve all been closely monitoring the weather situation and at long last the cyclones that have swirling around the Pacific Ocean for the last few months have eased and it looks as if we are going to have a relatively quiet voyage up to Vanuatu.
We said farewell to New Zealand in usual Oyster style with a great party and BBQ on Saturday night, reuniting with some people that we haven’t seen since we arrived in New Zealand in October.
There will be 18 boats on the next leg of the rally, 16 of which have sailed with us from Antigua and two new Oysters who joined us in New Zealand.
With the demise of Oyster in early February we’ve been care-taking the rally ourselves, however a few weeks ago we heard that the Company has been bought by a private individual. He’s not a venture capitalist - he’s an Oyster owner and a passionate sailor whose dedicated to continuing the Oyster brand - he’s not bought the company to resell and make a fast buck which is great news. He sent his RH man over to NZ to meet us all and the new company is supporting us for the remainder of the Oyster World Rally.
It’s approximately 1000 miles due north to the island of Tanna in Vanuatu which has an active volcano on it. The forecast is good and we expect the passage to take us approximately 6 days. There are four of us on board, Harvey and I, Nic our new First Mate and Steve our crew, so three hungry guys and lots of food!!
We won’t have any wifi for a couple of weeks therefore won’t be able to communicate on our normal email addresses, however we have can correspond via our boat email (satellite) “safiya {CHANGE TO AT} mailasail {DOT} com” and would love to hear from anyone who would like to speak to us - do keep in touch!
