3rd July 2010 - Rean's Birthday at sea.

Yesterday was uneventful with the wind changing to the south, so we needed to reef the main sail and we are close hauling it to the Canaries with the sea from the side and to the front and the wind at 60' on the port side.

It is very rough going. The waves come from the side and slam into the port hull and then the freeboard, which is where the saloon and galley are. The wave slam lifts the table and we can't put anything on it, as it will be thrown into the air and annihilated. The same thing happens to your kidneys when sitting on the aforementioned table as a wave slams into the boat. These are definitely the roughest days we have had on the trip so far.

The starboard forward cabin hatch is leaking like a sieve and the bilge keeps filling up with water which is salty, and we are unable to trace the source of the leak, but the bilge pump is sorting it out, as it fills by only 200ml every hour.
We are finding it difficult to walk around without being thrown into fixtures on the boat. The glass coffee container was thrown onto the floor and shattered into a million pieces last night during a particularly rough period, lasting several hours. Rean used the vacuum cleaner to pick up the glass last night, and then Matt used his feet to pick up the rest this morning.

Rean was given a fantastic gift for his birthday by Matt. It is a head light, which Rean found to be the most useful tool he has ever had, other than the Leatherman, which Mari gave to him last Christmas. We are going to have a party on board as soon as the milk is cold enough to make some chocolate mousse that was purchased on Faial.

Only 2 more days left of this wonderful experience. We are all looking forward to some creature comforts... Mari is missing bubble baths and a soft mattress that stay put and Pepper. Matt is missing Green. Rean is missing Kimi and Jon-jon.

So far, this leg of the trip has been up to expectations. The wind is blowing and the boat is moving at over 8 Knots. The sun has come out, after 2 days of hiding behind the clouds, and is shining brightly. The water is still chilly, but the days are warming up again. We have moved our watches onto UK time now.
