Porto de Leixoes and Porto

Yesterday we had a very quick sail from Viana do Castelo to Leixoes due to winds averaging about 30 knots. The marina here is small with visiting yachts being put on far too small berths so quite/very stressful! All yachts come here to visit Porto as really Leixoes is a commercial port. Porto has a shallow entrance and no real berthing possibilities(which is a real shame).

Woke up early today(9 oclock!) to get the bus into Porto. After missing the first one due to forgotten wallet and then after what seemed like 3 hours in unbelievable heat we arrived in the centre of Porto and quickly forgot bus journey. Porto is a great old city with winding narrow streets that slope down to the river. After delicious pastries and coffee we headed for the riverside quarter of Ribiera with picturesque houses and great bridges spanning the river. A trip over the bridge took us to Vila Nova de Gaia which is where all the Port warehouses are located. We then chose the Taylors warehouse for a guided tour and tasting session. Amazing the number of barrels row upon row. A cable car took us up to the top of the bridge we had crossed earlier. The views were incredible. I had not realized before that Eiffel had engineered bridges as well  as the tower in Paris.

We chose to get a taxi back which was also interesting. The taxi driver thought he was Ayrton Senna and overtook everything even when there was no space! Then seemed to go to sleep. We are safely back on the boat now though!! Photos to follow.
