Incredible Snorkelling - Champagne Reef Dominica

Yesterday we took a trip down to Soufriere at the south of the island and went snorkelling on the Champagne Reef. Volcanic gases bubble up through the rock to create an effect of swimming in a champagne glass. It was absolutely superb. All around this is a national park and the water clarity was unsurpassed. The variety of coral and fish was the best we have seen on the whole trip so far.

After a 2 hour snorkelling session we went to the HOT water pool at Soufriere - this was incredible also. The volcanic gases are so hot and near the surface that pools of HOT water have formed by the sea. We stayed in as long as we could take the heat.

It rains a lot here - short sharp showers and then it clears up again just as quickly. We will set off shortly for Rupert Bay and Portsmouth to the North of the island, we are planning a trip up the Indian river... Here are some pics from yesterday...
