After our volcano climbing epic, we continued our
journey south with Anna on board. We visited Lamen Bay on Epi again, home
of the dugong we swum with on our way north. Unfortunately, he'd decided
to undertake some voyaging of his own, and was out at sea this time, but Anna
had the chance of snorkelling with the tens of big turtles in the
bay.
Next we dropped the hook in the lee of Cook Reef
for the night. A reef atoll a couple of miles across with no land, and
spectacular coral. We spent the afternoon snorkelling with some new
friends on a catarmaran we'd met a couple of days before. Anna
saw her first sharf - a reef shark lurking between the coral bombies, then
darting off into the deep - which she took very calmly.
A night off the steep volcanic island which
dominates Efate (the main island's north coast), and a climb up one of the
extinct cones. Then down to this bay, on the north edge of Efate
itself. Anna caught the 6.30am veg truck to market to make it back to the
capital Port Vila for her flight back around the world. Late on Friday
night our great friends Marve and Molly made it over from Brisbane for a long
weekend, taking us up on the offer of a tropical island treat to make up
for the fact that we dismally failed to make it to their wedding back in the UK
a few months ago.
We're based in this bay, tucked inside the
privately owned Kakula island, as it is a great kitesurfing spot. I've
just squeezed in 3 days kiting in a row, and my whole body feels rather
battered. Marve had a full on kiting session yesterday too, while Rach and
Molly chatted at a million miles an hour on the white sand beach. Marve
has yet to emerge from his bunk, but I suspect may be feeling a touch stiff this
morning!
After the weekend we will make our way around to
Port Vila, and moor up. We have a lady coming out at the end of the month
who is interested in buying the boat and sailing it on from here. So
possibly, the wind driven part of our adventures, afloat the faithful Kokamo are
nearly at an end... Sad, but at some point soon necessary if we're going
to make it back to the UK for Christmas as planned!
