Woke to steam rising off the calm cove around us. Quick coffee and into the dingy with Ian, huge success: two rainbow trout and one bloody big Atlantic Salmon. These are escapees from the many fish farms here and Ian knew just the right place to put the net out. No need to say we have had fish for the last three meals.

On the escapees theme we went to Sarah Island and joined a tour boat crowd for a guided tour around the former convict prison. They were tough blokes in those days and to imagine the conditions they lived in was quite easy when you saw the place. Sadly at the turn of last century most Tasmanians were embarrassed about what went before and either stole bits of the buildings or in one case  blew up a whole sandstone and hand-made brick building.

We then sailed about 30 mins to this protected inlet to check out the bush. We tinnied ashore and set off on a walk, we lasted about one hour before we could move no further, the scrub was so thick we couldn’t make headway. Also made us appreciate the effort for those convicts who managed to escape.

Still quite windy outside and cold but a nice feed of fresh trout has warmed the bellies.

Tomorrow we will head up the Gordon River, we will try to recreate those heady days of the No Dams protests of the 1980s. Not sure how the Type A’s will go in their new T-shirts “Save trees, woodchip a greenie”  and “Keep warm this winter, burn a greenie”. Ian and I will be sitting on the aft deck sniffing huon pipe sticks.
