The morning after

The morning after finds us sitting on the reception pontoon waiting for the office to open so we can get a contact for a diver.  This is easily organised and by late morning he’s arrived, dived and cut away the offending debris from the fishing pot – yellow floats and a mess of line.  He’s also able to confirm that the propeller seems to be turning OK so this is a great relief and we’re able to book in and move to a berth inside the marina.  Now it’s down to payments and paperwork.  So, how much does it cost to have a boat towed?  The answer is a staggering 750 euros per hour plus VAT at 23%.  Manuel tells us that he covers the whole of the Portuguese coast and we were lucky to be so close to Cascais with the tow taking only 2 hours!   He feels it should be covered by our insurance but the company is completely unhelpful and won’t give any comment until we’ve completed the claim form and they’ve received it by post in England.  In the meantime we will be unable to leave Cascais as Manuel has a claim on the boat until the bill is paid.  We reluctantly decide we have no choice but to pay him directly and then put our claim in and hope for the best – turns out it was not only an uncomfortable night but an expensive one too!
