Day 8 Cape Town to Fremantle: Good Morning my little molluscs. Merry Christmas to you all!

At the risk of spoiling your fun, I thought we'd take a minute to explain the names in the blogs,

Laura is Salty Sal - is an explanation really needed here? Sometimes I am referred to as Stirling, as in Stirling Moss British Racing car driver, after making a very small dent in a hire car in an underground Maderia carpark which perhaps COULD have been attributed to excess speed, but this has never been proven...The kids often call me Moomar.

Pandora is MEERKAT, because she pokes her head up through the hatch to check if the boat speed is in line with her expectations or if there is another 1/4 of a knot of boat speed to be had. She spins her head 'round, then drops below, to do critical strategy work in her cabin which usually involves her mac and the dvd collection. Her seasickness is nearly all over, often rears its ugly head when dishes need to be done on pink days??

Toby is mash n beans, not too sure why this is, as it is a self proclaimed title. He has been previously referred to as MOBY as he is the whale spotter onboard. He really ought to be called EAGLE EYE as he has an uncanny ability to see things on the boat which need to be rectified, such as a mis-lead lazy yankee sheet, a head car which has separated from the mainsail at the top of the mast (??) or a loose pin on the mainsheet traveller. This characteristic is an incredibly valuable one, as if things are fixed in time, it can save a bundle of trouble in the form of money, unnecessary risky jobs on the foredeck in 30 knots of wind and resulting consequences. Toby often writes about food in his blog, on the basis that he is a 16 year old young man and if he is not currently eating food, then talking about food is the next best thing.

Mikey usually refers to himself as just Mikey, though references to Drama Queen may have been made in the past. It's more than my life is worth to comment why this is, just take it from me, it just IS, alright?? Mike's blog entries often make reference to paint lockers, remote historical references like Caesar and Brutus (sp), look at that he quotes them, and i can't even spell them!!

More favourable winds have been forecasted for us, starting from today, hopefully allowing us to see the end of the south easterlies. We haven't caught any fish yet. The sun made an appearance yesterday afternoon, which was quite exciting as we hadn't seen any glimmer of it for several days. The southern ocean is often very monochrome, there are various shades of white and grey, but little colour. We've had 4 birds with us from Simon's Town, medium sized black swoopy things which are amazing wave dodgers.

I hear we have flapping sheets on the foredeck and given it is 2am and my watch, I had better go and sort out before anybody wakes up! The wind seems to have gone light which often heralds a change, must be on deck to see if this change is the favourable one we want.

love and best wishes for a safe time ahead,
Salty Sal xx
