Zonne-eclips

Solar eclipse
Everyone excited, friday morning, 11.42 solar eclipse, 93%, visible Svalbard, I turned on the video camera, and early out of bed (we went there late because Geert departed at 02.30) For anyone who had wanted to see, you have not missed much , It was for a moment less light in Svalbard, but that was all.
Walrus in the port
Friday we were made aware of a walrus in the port! Ah yes, right next to the quay of the Store Kull Company (once owned by the dutch, just like New York, for an apple and an egg sold by us!) He had found a place. Delicious on the beach, just sleeping. Apparently one of the main activities of walrus, or catching fish and mussels or just sun-bathing on the beach. We could approach him very close.
Two Norwegians stranded with rubber dinghy and rescued by ........
Friday was the lovely weather, walking outside without jacket and drinking coffee at the terrace of the harbourmaster, until he got a call from a couple Norwegians who were stranded on the other side of the adventfjord with their rubber dinghy. The harbourmaster wanted to solve it, but had no staff available, but ....... Willem and Ingrid wanted to help? Of course, sensation, we are in for it!. We had to get in the harbourboat fast, the harbourmaster started it already, it is a fast motorboat, Ingrid and William as crew. We must be look like professionals, headset for communication and sitting in special chairs with seat belts, to protect us for falling off due to the high speed and waves. We crossed the fjord with over 26 knots. We could not beach the boat, we had a simple solution, the Norwegians had to put their shoes off, while Willem pushed the aluminum stairs out of the front of the boat. The Norwegians could enter the boat with wet feet! Once inside, they were warmly welcomed by Ingrid, so everybody wants to be saved by this great crew!
Hanna and Danny
Hanna works in the local coffee shop, no, not like in the Netherlands, but a real coffee serving sweets/lunch and coffee, delicious coffee! She saw us in the shop for the second year, she liked to see the Twinga. Friday she came with her friend Danny, who is dutch, to visit us. She had delicious cakes and we have taken great laugh. Till deep in the night we exchanged stories. Hanna is half Swedish / half American and Danny is real Limburger (the most southern dutch province), very pleasant.
The weather
What most strikes in Spitsbergen, the differences in the weather, yesterday delicious sun, a cold cloudy day today, this evening with a visibility of up to 50 meters, a small world. The forecasts are less good, north / northwest winds, and from Thursday is expected snow! The north wind will turn much sea ice sliding toward Spitsbergen, so we have to be careful when we sailed with Carla and Paul to the north.
Polar Bear
No, this time no bear, but the name of a 70 foot super sailing yacht. Friday evening, they refueled at the quayside, so it was the dutch welcome committee, Ingrid and Willem at the Soapbox, Goal: try to get on board to see the ship. What appears now, this ship is the former Aviva, which Dee Caffari as the first women sailing single handed over the world. See www.deecaffari.co.uk. The ship is now owned by Phil Richardson, but even look at www.thepolarfront.com, in any case information exchanged. Saturday, we heard that their sweetwaterpump was destroyed, we still have a reserve onboard, which was therefore very welcome, they replace him now, they will supply us a new one.
Our daily activities is resting, talking with the crews of other boats, a lot of coffee drinking and keeping the harbourmaster from doing his work, so it is good to stay in Longyearbyen. Tomorrow still we have to do some tasks, we had some problems with the new outboard engine, but it works fine now. Furthermore, the things we always do when we are in port are, cleaning, washing, engine maintenance and stuff like that. Friday night on the radio with CasaLuna, so everyone in the Netherlands can hear our voices (go to www.twinga.nl and click on the red coloured icon with -NCRV-and listen to the broadcast, we are on the last ten minutes of the second hour Casa Luna)
Furthermore, we want to thank everyone who in recent weeks has ordered our book. If it continues it will soon be sold out! So for those who have not yet ordered, go quickly to www.twinga.nl and click on the black-white icon and order your copy today! This to avoid disappointment!
