North Atlantic Ocean has Been Returned after
Upgrades and Repairs
The eastern section of the North Atlantic Ocean, mainly south of
latitude 38, and north of latitude 30, and east of longitude 30,
known for it’s choppy high seas and often unpredictable weather , has been
returned to it’s original place after an extensive 6 month overhaul.
Beginning last September, 2011, a group of Ocean activists,
known as the North Atlantic Improvement Association, (NAIA) , comprised of
cruisers, yacht racers, fisherman, and delivery captains, banned together
and lobbied for this section of the Atlantic Ocean to have a complete
makeover, to make usage more user friendly for small craft. Financed
by the E.U, The United States, and Fillipe, the NOIA worked with
oceanographers, marine scientists, meteorologists and magicians, to create
gentler breezes, calmer seas and less salt.
“Have you ever tried washing all this salt out of your yoga
pants?” says Cindy Fletcher Holden, co-owner of American Yacht “Tenacity”,
who completed a successful transatlantic sail summer of 2011.
Some worry the reduction of salt will affect the salt pans that
are still active in the Ria Formosa outside of Faro Portugal. “If these
people take away my salt,” Says salt pan farmer, Henrique Rodriquez, “it may
hurt my living!”
But scientists assure Mr. Rodriquez and other salt pan operators
that there will still be plenty of salt to pan. “Probably people
could stand to eat less salt anyway” says Fletcher Holden, also an active
member of the NAIA.
Now that the North Atlantic is back in service and open once
again to sailors and mariners alike, it’s difficult to say for sure if the
improvements really worked.
“It sure is fun when you’re on a broad reach!” Says Alan
Venn, crew on Tenacity.
Time will tell if the overhaul took hold. Meanwhile, ships,
fishermen and sailors are back on the high seas, hopefully enjoying some good
June sunshine and gentle 25 knot Northerly winds.

North Atlantic Fitness Center to Host 2012
Eastern Atlantic Cockpit Wave Riding Championships
The North Atlantic Fitness Center, which opened last summer,
will be the official host of this year’s challenging Cockpit Wave Riding
Championships. A sport that combines the athletic prowess of a stunt horseback
rider, the delicate balance of a dancer, and good working electronics. The
idea is to achieve the highest average speed while sailing down waves on a broad
reach. There will be divisions based on boat size. In the 14-15 Meter
Division, Cindy Fletcher Holder is entering with her yacht “Tenacity”. “It
is such a thrill!” She says, “I not only look at the actual speed, but out GPS
displays how much time there is until the next destination. When I hit that
sweet spot and blast down a good wave, I see the destination time drastically
reduced! My goal is to arrive by yesterday!!”
Some say Fletcher Holden has had too much time on her hands to
think clearly, but we at MOTO Gazette are pulling for her and Tenacity to
achieve high points at this fun filled event!!!
