Of the Seven islands that make up the Canaries, the more Eastern
islands are dry , closest to North Africa and less touristy than the
islands to the West. The long island of Fuerteventura is the largest but least
populated of the bunch. Well, Graciosa was hardly populated but that
is “officially” part of Lanzarote. '
Arricife, the Capital of Lnazarote, is a sizeable city with a crowded busy
port, crowded sun soaked beach, upscale shopping and a tall shiny hotel with a
grand piano sitting in an upstairs lounge area. I know this because when
we walked by this hotel on one our daily evening “walkabouts”,
I could practically “smell” that there was a piano nearby. We waltzed right in,
I stomped right up the stairs, saw it, sat right done and played for an hour.
This is what happens when you have “Piano Withdrawl”. Apparently I played
OK. NO one asked us to leave ad people clapped.
The town of Playa Blanca is on the southern tip of Lanzarote. It is a
tourists saturated beach city with very little Spanish feel. More like Disney
Land. But still, a happy place, and a very pretty beach and an
old harbor.
Fuerteventura is practically spitting distance from Play Blanca. And
sailing down the Eastern coast of this island is like sailing along a lot of
sloping brown and gray rock. No development, except a sprinkling
here and there, and no green. The city of Gran Tarajal is towards
the bottom and for Feurteventura, a fairly big town, although there are one or
two bigger This town has a great beach and a little “bay”, where boats can
anchor provided the wind is not from the south.
![]() ![]() Along the beach is a busy waterfront promenade where all the towns
nicer cafes and restaurants are. To the south of town is the
boatyard and marina. In town, there are a few small cafes, some
lively bars, A well manicured and active park, two gas stations,
three sporting good stores, a few grocery stores, (two big,) a few banks, some
clothing stores, one sort of “Department Store”, A vet, about five
bread stores, a book store, a “paper/stationary” store, a liquor
store, A kids’ toy store, one chandlery, two hardware stores,
one China store, and excellent art supply and paint store, two cell phone stores
and about fifty hair salons. All local, not a tourist shop in
sight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not even a postcard stand!!! We like
this!!!!
Outside of town are residential streets, a school, bus stops and more
moon.
