Roots getting deep

It was a matter of seconds, not hours or days, but seconds after the dock
lines were tied and the engine turned off, that “stuff” materialized all
over the boat. Our clean folded laundry on the forward bunks instead of
put away. Books, magazines, maps, and paper receipts an any
horizontal surface. Shoes on the floor instead of in lockers.
Jackets flung on bunks and chairs. Chairs not tied and stowed. Pens,
sunglasses, coffee cups, backpacks, tools and cat toys everywhere, not
neatly stowed away like when we were at Sea. Talking to other cruisers
reveals that this is common to everyone, no matter what the native language
is! We have been talking about going to another island by boat now for
days, but then we stay another day in Horta. We finally started to put things
away and hope to get to Sao Georges tomorrow. We do have a crew flying in
to Horta on August 26, so we have some reason to be here. But the Island of Sao
Georges is only 22 miles away and we are too complacent to go there!!!
Not that Horta is a bad place! We’ve been seeing a lot of this
place. The people are very friendly. And I’ve been making little color
drawings on heavy watercolor paper of cool street scenes. In fact, I’ve
made enough to justify a small show! I figure I’ll have an opening, with
wine and cheese, and if they don’t sell, I’ll ship them home for the Fall Art
Between the Creeks show. I mentioned this to our American neighbors, Neil
and Laurie, the ones who sailed here on a Triton 28, and they want to
participate! Laurie wants to show some of her photography, and Neil wants
to play guitar at the reception! We’ll dress up! I’ll wear my new shoes!!!
Laurie says having a show will motivate her to take more photos. So we’ve
been hitting the streets in the evenings when the sun is lower and the shadows
are cooler, and we’ve been planning our opening. I need to make fliers and
get the word out.
I did put up a flier advertising boat lettering on the marina message board
but haven’t gotten any bites yet. I hope the Art Show fliers get
more attention.
