Australia Morris Island proved the perfect venue for an afternoon stroll,
assuming we didn’t mind sharing with the local crocodile population. Having spotted a long flat spit of white
sand we challenged Yantina and Pearl of Persia to a petanque contest. Daughter
Laura had given Alan a set of boules several years ago but it had remained
buried in the bilges. I don’t think anyone was concentrating too hard on their
throws – they were too busy keeping an eye open for crocodiles. After the
contest we made a circuit of the island (took all of 15 minutes) and discovered
the grave of a local fisherman complete with an assortment of “tributes” such as
business cards, old flip-flops, attractive drift-wood and various scraps of
flotsam and jetsam. When Andrew and
Will (from Yantina) did their circuit of the island they discovered the deep
imprint of a large crocodile’s body not far from the water, on the wet sand
where we had only just passed. I don’t know whether it was just that we hadn’t
noticed the tracks or whether the crocodile had arrived since we passed.
Nevertheless we made a fairly quick
departure. |
