We have arrived! We had to wait before entering the Town Cut into St
Georges for a cargo vessel to precede us, then made our way to the customs dock.
We were pleasantly surprised to be greeted by a number of people we had met
earlier during our Caribbean cruise, so it will be good to catch up with their
news.
As forecast, the final 24 hours were plugging into strong headwinds, with
some big seas at times. However Island Wanderer coped admirably, maintaining
about 6 knots even with decks awash with water.
The journey was 830 miles on a straight line. We sailed slightly further to
get a better angle to the wind, and it took us 5 days 4 hours – 124 hours.
Average speed on the rumb line was 6.7 knots. We sailed probably 860 miles,
using the engine for 30 hours (more than planned), but the best way to tackle
the headwinds without sailing a much greater distance.
We thoroughly enjoyed the trip, and are looking forward to the delights
that Bermuda has to offer – though slightly concerned at some of the prices
being quoted for ships stores that others have purchased ready for their trip to
the Azores.
The boat was thoroughly encrusted with salt. A good wash down has improved
that, though if there is no rain, we will have to do it again as there is still
plenty of salt around!
