Dolce Vita cast off at 0719 and was soon sailing at 7 to 8 knots in a strong northerly wind, although sailing under reefed foresail she was well heeled over with Atlantic rollers breaking over the deck, with winds gusting to 42 knots (severe gale force 9). Bedlam ensued when a strap holding the bimini parted, shortly followed by the realisation that the residue from the leaking diesel tank had found it’s way into the saloon bilges.

All problems overcome and the wind has reduced to a more reasonable force 4, unfortunately 3 of the crew are feeling seasick as a result of the diesel fumes combined with an uncomfortable motion.

TC, who must have a cast iron constitution, is now preparing our first “gourmet supper” aboard – chicken provencale, no less. We hope we will be able to do it justice!

We have covered 68 nautical miles since casting off.

I must sign off now, having just been called up on deck, another storm is building.
