ANZACS The water lapping at my heels, Smooth slippery stones smiling at my soul, Calling of nature is irresistible, As I wonder the world of my ancestors, I kneel in the depths of a trench, Mud covering my face and hands, A herd of shells cover the ground above, My ears are throbbing with noise, And our neighbors have turned their backs, We were standing on the top of Chunuk Bair, It had the best view in the world, Bullets shot with a horrific sound, And the world faded before my eyes.
Leddie Le Gallais was the close friend of my Great Grandfather Robert Speight. I dedicate this poem to him Leddie was killed on duty at Quinns Post, and my great grandfather badly injured at Chunuk Bair. |
