The passage to Nantucket was another short hop of only 23Nm. The ocean is
once again very shallow. The most direct route had depths of only 4m and
shifting sand banks makes navigation a little anxious. Indeed, we just
touched bottom in water that the charts claimed had more than 4.1M of water
when we need only 2.7M Fortunately the touch was on sand and we were not
completely stopped before we were again sailing. We anchored off Nantucket
in the Boat Basin where many other boats bobbed about at anchor too. We made
for sure in our dingy. It has 20hp which is sufficient for a 3.2M tender. It
is a dry experience provided sea chop is minimal. If is not we have to
expect a splash or two which is why I always take the stern to man the
tiller. Not very chivalrous I know! There is usually a small dock for
tenders at most anchorages and Nantucket was no different. We liked
Nantucket a lot. It seemed to us to have a far better selection of
restaurants and boasted a certain elegance we thought missing from Martha's
Vineyard.

We took a local bus to Edgartown which is another favourite town on
Nantucket. . There we walked to view a fine lighthouse. A rather fine
distance compass told us we were 3612 Nm from London.
