We met at Basingstoke railway station waiting for the commuter train to Waterloo. Can be awkward, you recognise the faces because we are mostly creatures of habit so the routine is well engrained to make the 0816. Failure is unthinkable because it means chasing the day all day which means irritation and pressure. Just a miserable start to the day. I really do not recall now who spoke first but soon with the ice broken common ground was established quickly with squash, the law and living near Basingstoke. Roger and I soon started squash after work and have kept in touch some twenty something years later even though our life paths have gone in different places. Perhaps it was the interest in sailing, but Roger and Sue happen to be our first friend visitors aboard Shelena to stay for the weekend and explore Guernsey in general and Herm in particular. We took the ferry from St Peter Port to Herm on a dull and rainy day, so arrival meant a stop for coffee in the local pub then walk the complete island in a few hours. It was the first time that I have ever had an ice cream before noon as Sue insisted she was buying and, of course, it would be rude to decline! Herm ice cream is rather nice. Helen felt Herm to be the ideal destination for a long weekend in the future, but to stay in the nice looking hotel provided the weather could be warm and sunny. Not sure if we will ever make it with that requirement but Herm is stunning.

Next day it was time to take Shelena for a spin. Time was short because the tidal range is so vast   In these waters, at about 8 metres, so there is limited time for sailing before the marina is closed to our 2.4 M draft. We had to return to ensure Roger and Sue were able to make their flight. home. Roger is an experienced sailor and it was not long before he and the helm were at one while Helen and Sue enjoyed a good chat!
