We discussed whether to leave La Gomera directly for Gran Canaria or stop as
we passed by at Tenerife. A stop over would have made sense, but we both
have visited Tenerife years ago so there was not a strong pull to tread old
ground. So it was, 13 hours of motoring to Las Palmas, which was very boring
with winds of just 2 or 3 knots. However, Las Palmas is where the ARC +
starts and we have some snagging issues that Oyster need to make good so we
felt we wanted to be in plenty of time for their crew later next week. The
highlight was to spot two whales, but well abeam the yacht, so not the close
encounter we still seek. The biggest excitement was that in the last ten
minutes before arrival at what is a busy port the wind did pick up and there
were commercial ships anchored everywhere. We arrived just as darkness fell,
but with sufficient light to be shown to out pontoon. Shelena will now rest
here. Helen is to make a trip to the UK but I will stay aboard. One month
from now and we will have Petri aboard. Looking forward to that. He will be
followed by Kathryn and Jules who have now completed RYA Day Skipper,
theory and practical exams. Well done to them! It seems that I will sleep
even more soundly in my bunk comforted by all this knowledge. Incidentally,
for those in the UK, it is hot here. About 28 degrees.
