Home made bread delivered fresh every morning to our yacht at Oieras, near
Lisbon, had to end sometime. Oieras gave way to our next passage of about
60Nm to Sines where we found a pleasant harbour where we simply anchored,
choosing not to use the local marina on this occasion. It was so good that
we stayed two nights enjoying our tender transfer from yacht to beach to
access the small fishing port. Sines is known as the birth place and home of
the great Portuguese explorer, Vasco Da Gama, who is credited with being the
first to find a route to India from Portugal many centuries ago. We found a
typical small restaurant with excellent food in the centre of the town and
watched the world pass by from our shady table. Incidentally, wine in
Portugal is excellent and unbelievably inexpensive. The menu price is less
than EU10 for a bottle and a supermarket price of more than EU4 and I am
feeling extravagant! We pensioners need to take account of such matters, no
pun intended!
