10th June, 2016 Savannah

We departed St Augustine at 1230 for an over night passage of about 150Nm to Savannah. We had to wait for the St Augustine Bridge of Lions to open to allow us to pass through. It is dramatic to wait and see the traffic stop before the draw bridge opens. The gap seems narrower than it is. On this occasion we followed a tourist pirate ship as can be seen by the photo.

The trip started well enough under sail but as night came the wind died. 4 knots, 3, 2 then 1 knot. Main engine on and it remained on until our arrival at the mouth of the Savannah River. We motored with current assistance the 14 Nm to the Hyatt Hotel dock immediately alongside Rivet Street, Savannah. The river is fast flowing and a working river, ranked 5th busy port in the US. Not sure many know that fact. Accordingly, we see container ships passing along side regularly together with tourist paddle steamers. It is very hot here. About 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Seems like a trolley bus tour would be ideal to orientate ourselves.

Below is Helena alongside our dock.
