We are in Aves and at anchor. We arrived just on sundown last night. Otto helped guide us through the sand banks by radio, obregado. Irene and Otto also had a lobster dinner waiting for us, fantastic. Topped off with a good Champagne counted as our New Year celebration.

The sail down was excellent if a bit rolly. Wind and current with us almost all the way. Caught a decent fish although we managed to loose two lures, one reel of line and 3 fish.

We had the chance to try out the code zero and the Spinnaker, both of which worked well. The spinnaker needed some rigging changes so took it down and put it back up. During which it managed to gain several twists. While trying to remove the twists Noi thought she would manage the sheet by hand. When we had a gust come in the sheet picked her up and threw her straight through the gap between the shroud and the diagonal stay before she decided to let go. A small gap indeed, even for Noi. I should never have told her how much it cost, when I asked her why she didn’t just let go she said she was worried that the expensive sail would get damaged. Several bruises and scrapes later she is fine but sore to move about.

What a great looking place Aves is. Reminds us of the Bahamas with crystal clear waters, plenty of fishing, good beaches and coral for snorkelling or diving. It is also a bird sanctuary so multitudes of  birds flying about, diving for fish, building nests and feeding the chicks. We are far enough away from them to miss us with the subsonic poop. Liz would love it here!! We haven’t had a chance to get ashore yet but our friends are going to pick us up this afternoon to show us around.

We aren’t too sure how long we will stay here and not sure where we are going next. Certainly the ABC’s but not sure which one or if we will visit all 3. Although we want to get to Colon to gain a place in the canal transit queue we don’t want to miss out seeing what we can in the Caribbean before we leave. It seem to be coming down to deciding whether to miss some places in the Caribbean or miss some in the Pacific so we will just muddle on and decide as we go.
