Circumnavigation of Ireland

Getting up to face another grey day at 0430 did little for morale. Getting out of the finger berth in Howth single handed, with the wind blowing the boat forward and sideways into the pontoon was my first challenge. Anyway, all was well and I set sail reefed down, expecting huge gusts as I thought about crossing the entrance to Dublin Bay, with shipping channels, Transit points, cardinals, rocks, sand bars etc in my passage south. Apart from one huge container vessel in my way, all was well as I virtually surfed my way across the wide bay so early in the morning.

Thereafter the wind dropped a bit so I shook out the reefs and managed a fast sail for much of the trip, although for the last quarter or the 40 nm trip the wind almost died.

However I entered the small river into Howth and moored up alongside a pontoon, with shore access. After a well deserved sleep for an hour I thought about the next stop, Kilmore Quay, from where I started my circumnavigation of Ireland on 29 June, although I left Poole on 10 June and was weather bound at Kilmore for a few days before setting off.

Below one can see how different the east coast is to the north west, with its black weather beaten cliffs.
