Another very early start from Ardglass to catch the most of the tide, which was beneficial as I was flying for the first few hours of the passage to Howth. Having passed the entrance to Carlingford Lough and Dundalk, I used my fading athleticism on deck to hoist the Southern Irish courtesy flag on the starboard flag halyard to state that I was now sailing in Eire waters. Later on I noticed an Irish Navy mine sweeper inspecting my boat from a distance, having slowed down to have a good look. What was I smuggling, a bottle of Picpoul de Pinet?

I covered about 64 nms today, with limited sights to see as I sailed directly from point to point, seeing little land in between.

Photo here shows an early morning view of the Mourne mountains.

This extraordinary sight is an island off Howth called Ireland’s eye.
