We're progressing; tacking our way slowly
but surely. We do 6 hour watches in the day and then a three hour watch
each at night. I was on from 3am til 6. It's the first night watch
I've done since Boxing Day and in the meantime some sod's put up a bimini and
spoilt my view of the stars.
I had to wake Chris when the wind went all
random to help me furl in the genoa which was a shame. "Right," I thought,
"Tomorrow I'm going to have a go at furling it in by myself". I know what
to do I just wasn't prepared to attempt it for the first time in the
dark. "Hmmm," I pondered, "It would be easier to have a go if we're on a
starboard tack as the genoa sheet will be on the port winch which is closer to
the furling line, making it easier to winch and ease at the same time."
Then I thought, "Where did that come from? A year ago I wouldn't have
understood a word of that." It's almost a year to the day (27th
June last year - the day Germany thrashed England in the World Cup) that I
first boarded Island Spirit for my Comp Crew Course. Since then I've
clocked up nearly 3,000 nautical miles, crossed the English Channel and The
Bay of Biscay, sailed down 'the Coast of Death', crossed from Portugal to the
Canaries and cruised 5 out of the 7 Canary Islands. I think it's fair to
say now I've got the difficult stuff out of the way it's time to enjoy
some relaxed cruising.
