Frango Tonight

- Lagos Marina (still)
We were woken yesterday morning by the mother of all
thunderstorms with some hailstones thrown in for a bit of variety. The
marina waters, which were beginning to clear, once again resemble minestrone
soup. When it passed it was a beautiful day, sunny enough to
sun-bathe on the beanbags (albeit in jeans and a fleecy top) and finish
the Harlen Coben book that I started last night. I won't be living
the dream until I can do the same in far less clothing - and find a way of
topping up my already dwindling stock of unread books.
Then I took a trip with Ryan to the Seafari bar for their WiFi
(and a couple of beers, rude not to) to book him a flight home. He's had a
text from his dad and he needs to get home sharpish - something I've been
expecting for some time. Although it's far from ideal at least I
won't feel guilty for every day he's spent on board when I know he'd rather be
at home. We managed to book a flight to Bristol for this
morning so we mentioned to Gemma, the pretty blonde barmaid (with the
enviable figure I took for granted when I was her age), that we
were looking for crew for the Canaries.
Last night we took Ryan to our favourite restaurant,
Adega da Marina, where he devoured a plate of ribs,
I re-ordered the grilled piri-piri chicken and Chris another
steak. If the marina fees were comparable to the cost of eating there we
would stay here forever, despite everything I've said about the
weather. Back at the marina we opted for a different bar to Seafaris,
where Chris and I entertained nobody with a bit of dancing. I wimped out
early and left the boys to it.
Chris took Ryan to the station early this morning and on
his return the electrician turned up to look at the
bow-thruster. He donned protective booties so he wouldn't
dirty our boat (unlike a certain you know who) and quickly ascertained that we
need new batteries. Courteous, efficient - and rather dishy too
- now that's what I call service. Marco Marine immediately agreed to
the fix and the batteries will be installed on Monday. Progress at
last. Chris was craving Linda's Bar's clam chowder for lunch so we got on
our bikes and returned. This time, presumably due to the strong winds, the
sea was scattered with kite-surfers rather than traditional surfers. Just
as nuts if you ask me.
We made a quick detour to Pingo Doce, the supermarket, on the
way back, where Chris beat his record for the cheapest wine he can
find (€0.68 for a litre of white, trumping the previous record of €3.98 for
5 litres of astonishingly tasty red). Amongst other things, we
bought some frango (chicken). There's a picture of the animal on
packs of meat here, which is helpful as many of the cuts aren't quite so
'sanitised' as we're used to in the UK and a bit difficult to
recognise. Chris is in chief in charge of frango tonight, so no
doubt it'll be with Lloyd Grossman's Thai Green Curry Sauce.
Thank goodness there's only two jars
