Adolphus Island to Port Douglas

The wind was still blowing a strong SE and not very pleasant off Thursday Island. As we had fully provisioned we motored the 20nm from Thursday Island to anchor in the lee of Mount Adolphus Island for a few days peace. Four days later the wind had eased and we headed south again inside the Great Barrier Reef. Just NE of the Lockhart River a high speed vessel was heading our way. By the time I had the fishing lines in the 'Seaway Patrol Police' were alongside, requesting the skipper to take a breathalyzer test, at11 a.m.! All clear, naturally!

Last year in September I had a successful time fishing, and the deep freeze was full of tuna and mackerel. Consequently my provisioning in Thursday Island didn't include fish, only buying a spare lure. After a few days trolling without success Phil came below 'there is nothing on your rod'. We hadn't heard the reel go, and the lure and over 200m of line had all gone! Having set the rod up again, the rod was more closely guarded, and at last success, excitement as the reel squealed. But oh no its a shark! Not for my table - he was allowed to swim away after we cut the hook out – warily.

On 2nd April we anchored off Port Douglas, a town which we had missed on our way north. First stop ashore was the fishing tackle shop for another lure and wire leaders. I was also 'sold' a teaser for live (dead) bait. The fishing P&L account was definitely in the red! The town is set along the river and had a relaxing ambiance. We would have liked to stay longer but the wind was quiet so after re-fuelling we continued south.
