Our next mainland stop was Townsville, where we stayed 3 nights in the marina. It is a vibrant cosmopolitan town, (pop: 183,000) a small Sydney of the north. Historically and still today it supports the mining industry and exports bulk sugar.

In 1942 Townsville was the largest Allied Operational Base in the 'Battle of the Coral Sea'. There is a moving memorial park with plinths commemorating the brave individuals for their leadership and acts of defiance during this conflict.

We enjoyed dinner out in the bar of a chic Casino Hotel looking across to Magnetic Island, takeaway fish and chips and made good use of the marina courtesy car to sightsee and shop (chandlers of course!).
