Our next navigational challenge was the Hinchinbrook Channel running between Hinchinbrook Island and the mainland. The main channel is 26nm long, with countless navigable creeks amongst the mangrove forests, crocodile territory.

It is reportedly a very scenic passage with magnificent peaks of mountains either side but sadly for us the day was overcast, and visibility poor in drizzle.

At the southern entrance is the small town of Lucinda, which has a 5km long jetty for loading ships with bulk sugar. We anchored there for breakfast after our early morning leg over from Orpheus Island – a night amongst a fleet of anchored prawn trawlers.

At the NO end of the channel we had a rolly night at anchor off Cardwell
