Saturday morning, after our quiet night at Mount Adolphus island, we sailed the final 30 nm north-west, through the Flinders Channel to Thursday Island & Horn Island which are either side of the Ellis Channel. The latter provides a more sheltered anchorage from the strong persistent SE trade wind that funnels through the area. After checking out wrecks and submarine cables we opted to anchor between the reefs near a blue fishing boat.
We took the dinghy across to Thursday Island, to shop and explore. The potted history of Thursday island and the Torres Strait was engraved on the pathway, including its strategic position during WW11. We had a very wet and lumpy return trip in the dinghy as the tide had turned, and the wind was back to its customary F5/6.
