Last night at sunset anchored in Deshaise we saw the famed "green flash" as
the big fiery ball dipped below the sea. We have read about this phenomenon
but in the prior 30 Caribbean sunsets we have not seen it. Last nights
conditions must have been perfect - and perhaps a couple of Pina Coladas
helped. It definately does exist and we were quite thrilled to finally see
it.
We had a quick walk around ashore at Deshaise - coffee and croissants at the
boulangerie (as you do). then discovered we had come ashore with no money!
M set off for a run around town before returning 30 min later from the
obscure far reaches with some cash. By then some of the rustic charm had
worn off!
Departed at 10.00 hrs for the leg north. Lumpy seas kept some members of
the crew a little seedy for much of the trip - but the boat sailed
beautifully and we made the 43 miles in just under 6 hours.
English harbour turns out to be very picture-sqew - we like this place and
can see ourselves returning for more when we have some time. Will check in
and out in the morning and look at pricing for the haul out to see if we
will paint our bottom here. After all it was good enough for Nelson - could
be good for us too.
Not sure if we will make it up to Shirley Heights until we return - seems to
me that the bar at the top is the main purpose of the hike up the hill -
which may not be such a good look at 8.30 tomorrow morning.
Next target is St Martin - 97 miles from here. We may go round to one of
the other harbors on the west coast of Antigua tomorrow for the jump off -
which would allow us to do it as a daylight trip. Obviously we are well out
of the habit of the night trips - but this is cruising in the Caribbean!
