At Sea - Day 12
Day`s run .. 164 miles. .. and closing in on
Newport USA.
Over the last 24 hours we have experienced dramatic changes in weather and
sea temperature. As we left the Gulf stream - we were in shorts and Tee
Shirts - ( all the way from Bernuda infact ) - the sea water was
22 degrees, yet within 20 miles it had plunged to 16 degrees - and now it
is a cold 10 degrees as we enter the Labrador current which carries Icebergs
south. This change in water temperature creates permament fog banks
if a warm southerly airflow comes across this cold sea.
This is what we are experiencing now.
Throughout the night we had persistent rain and fog banks and it was
bitterley cold. Everyone was in Musto offshore gear and fully kitted up and
prepared. Micks Cottage Pie "hit the spot" and warmed everyone up ... to think
only 8 hours earlier we had landed a another Mahi Mahi - a warm water fish!
By 4 am we had passed the busiest shipping lanes, and now we are dealing
with local Traffic around Nantucket - Marthas Vineyard and finally
Newport. Our Radar is an essential tool. The routine - is slower engine /
or sail - constant radar watch and constant look out / listening - and fog horn
on .. This is frustrating as we are so close. This is a busy area, so we
have to be careful and fully aware.
At 11am, during a break in the fog, Mel, who also doubles up as todays
Mother ( yummy Bacon sandwiches ).. hoisted the US Courtesy flag and our
Quarantine flag. We are all hoping to get in tonight and try a US Steak - (
Rather than risk Mels cooking ! )
Our ETA into Newport Shipyard is 6pm - local time.
