Day 4. An early start to get around to
Fort-de-France, the capital of Martinique, and fulfill our customs obligations
and get some souvenir local beer! There were some technical difficulties that
occupied the rest of the morning and then off to St. Pierre, the old
capital.
St Pierre was completely destroyed by the volcano,
Montagne Pelee in 1902 and killed all 30,000 occupants, apart from one - a
prisoner who was saved by the strength of his cell walls. Apparently, the licky
prisoner - Antoine Ciparis - ended up travelling in a replica cell with the
Barnum & Bailey circus. Maybe not such a reprieve after all!
Whilst St Pierre never recovered its importance as
a town it is charming little place with a luscious green backdrop and thats
where we stay tonight.
