Quite a day of travelling, and now we are settled in the small hill village
of Ella. We left Galle before 8 am and made our way along the coast. Lots of
bays with sandy beaches, a little reminiscent of Thailand. There seem to be
few tourists and it became obvious as we went along that the country is
still suffering the effects of the tsunami and the activities of the Tamil
Tigers. We were to find out later just how much!
One or two stops for temples and a rice breakfast before we started inland
and headed north. At first quite low and undulating and then a rapid climb
to the hill village of Ella. This is a beautiful spot with stunning views at
over 2000 feet above sea level. A sleepy place with the smell of woodsmoke
in the air. Naturally we sniffed out a local bar for a beer or two and then
a great dinner at our small and friendly hotel.
