21st - 22nd September, 2013 – Timor Sea

Mainly light winds dogged us en route to Kupang, in Timor, Indonesia, so we did quite a bit of motoring and enjoyed the company of a dozen or more Pantropical Spotted Dolphins. We also came across yet another patch of ‘red soup’, the cloudy patch formed in the sea by the coral spawning, which we had first witnessed off Hamilton Island, in Australia. However, this was when, in the very lightest of breezes, the crucially-important headstay furling system decided to finally give up the ghost and the aluminium foil tore in two across the feeder section. This foil is the key element that allows us to hydraulically reef our large headsail, so we were now paralysed up forward, with the threat of having to sail the whole route ahead across the Indian Ocean from Bali to Cape Town without a genoa!
