16^th August, 2013 – Marlin Marina, Cairns, Queensland, Australia

Arrived in Cairns, which was much smaller than we expected; not much bigger than Colchester but it was absolutely heaving with young people. Every road was packed with bars, back-packers’ hostels and travel agencies catering for everyone’s dream holiday.  A park just outside the marina hosted a two day celebration of Australia’s indigenous people, the Aborigines, so we were able to see many of their art forms, sample their cuisine, enjoy their music and generally chat with them. Despite there being posters everywhere about racial tolerance and respecting each other’s differences, I was disappointed to see a group of police officers  approach a group of young Aborigine people who were enjoying a picnic, and start to harass them.  The police began to look embarrassed when they realised several groups of tourists were watching them, and they moved off.
