170nm through the
water and 189 overland. We took the jib down and replaced it with the small
spinnaker this morning, and then upgraded to the bigger kiddie kite a few hours
later. The wind has been dropping most of the day and is now down to about
10-12kts. We're still just about averaging 7kts most of the time and in
about the right direction. The seas have been calming down too, and when we've
got pressure in the kite the boat is pretty stable.
We have two more
fish - both also Maihi Maihi. We even took the rod in for a bit! Something about
busses theory....(!) Anyway, we've just finished enjoying our second fresh fish
dinner in a row - and another to come tomorrow. We've now run out of bread and
so the baking experiment started today - yet to be decided how well it went, but
my suspicion is that we'll be trying something a little different next
time...
The fish however
seem to be requiring payment in the way of boat kit - we've now managed to lose
both buckets over the side - whilst we've got comfortable with the boat doing
8kts, we're not quite got the technique of filling the bucket from over the
side at these speeds without losing it. Ewan and Jem are hoping there is a good
bucket shop in the Marquesas!
Today we have been
at sea for a week. We've been making pretty good progress, and are looking
forward to celebrating Colin's birthday (and half way - all being well)
tomorrow.
