We sailed to Block Island for a weekend visit. It's quiet at the moment but locals say that during July and August the population surges from 1,200 to 25,000 with the influx of vacationers. Three ferry services connect Block Island with the mainland, a small airport is used by small planes and most of the properties seem to be holiday rentals. In short, we picked a good time to be there. One local told Nirit that during the 4th of July holiday you can walk right across the Great Salt Pond where we were at anchor just by stepping from one yacht to another. The bike ride was a great day out and not too hard as the terrain is mostly flat. The light house is from the mid-18th century and now stands at the edge of a nature reserve, hence the seagulls behaving as if they own the place.
