There is something special and luxurious about having to wear sunglasses at breakfast. And no, not after a lie in delay in getting to the breakfast table. There was nothing my mother enjoyed more than sitting in the sun, so I guess I get it from her. This being a Sunday, we broke with routine and forgave the usual menu of fruit and cereal in favour of scrambled eggs on toast. I of course also had my regular favorite items of caffeine and aspirin.

We are anchored in a very sheltered bay, almost a lagoon, at Royal Island at the northern edge of Eleuthera. The place was originally called Real Island after the Spanish silver coins used by pirates. The pirates are long gone and have been replaced by property developers, without much success. There is a private estate dating from the 1950's in ruins and a luxury resort which was supposed to include a golf course and marina in mothballs. There is evidence of construction; a generator hums somewhere on shore and a fast boat ferries what might be a night watchman to and fro but the investors and tourists seem to have stayed away.

The weather is near perfect. A cold front passed through just as we were arriving and now we have a gentle breeze and temperatures in the high twenties. The water is warm and we wasted no time in taking a dip. The crew of another boat anchored near by have told us there is a beautiful reef to explore on the other side of the island so that is what we plan to do tomorrow. Today has been a day of 'make and mend', we tackled a dozen small repairs and maintenance issues that have cropped up since leaving Florida.

Our only worry at the moment is the amount of propane we have on board. Will it hold out until we reach Nassau some time later this week?
