We are getting used to foggy mornings, which usually
clear by lunch time. We only notice the fog horn blasting once every fifteen
seconds from a lighthouse across the bay when they switch it
The reduced visibility hasn't stopped us from exploring
the Narraganset Bay. We relied on our hearing and radar to sail to
Wickford, a charming little colonial-era village a few miles up the
river, spent the night there, browsed the antique stores and then moved on
On Friday evening we were back at the anchorage off
Newport and enjoyed a drink with Eden and Richard of
MAGNETIC SKY. In the evening we celebrated our thirty-first wedding anniversary
with a great meal at Lucia's, an Italian restaurant
recommended by friends. The food and the ambience were both superb.
Tonight we shall take the bus into Providence where
they have a "Water Fire' event; bonfires, live music and food along the
waterfront. Later we are having drinks with friends from L.A. who are
in town for for their son's graduation from Brown University. Randy &
Cinda are Chris's friends since university days and he hasn't seen them since
1999, I last saw them in 1987! Can you believe it?
We also have an arrangement to meet up with Candice
& Peter Teuber from the yacht BELIEVE who we first met in Guadeloupe earlier
this year and since spent time with in the Virgin Islands. Peter is a pilot
and if the weather permits they are flying up to Newport with their son Lucas to
spend the day with us on Sunday. If the weather is still risky, we'll make
On the way here we lost the wind-speed sensor from
the top of the mast. A replacement is on order from the local Raymarine
dealer and we hope to be able to collect it on Tuesday. This morning Chris has
dismantled and rebuilt the pump that discharges the holding tank - yuk -
and in general we are on top of maintenance projects.
So far in beautiful Newport we have walked the
cliffs, visited the oldest synagogue in America, the turn of century
mansions, had clam chowder and generally had a good time so far. As
soon as the sun peeps out you can feel spring all over, beautiful colors, plenty
of flowers and lots of friendly people.
