Weighed anchor and motored into a F3 south westerly breeze to Mahon, where we topped up the fuel tanks in readiness for the next leg to Sardinia. Left Mahon in the early afternoon and as soon as we cleared the harbour and turned east raised the reacher foresail and turned the engines off. It wasn’t long before the wind belied the south westerly forecast and backed to the south east. So reacher in, genoa and mainsail out and with the wind settling into a F4 we were soon cruising along at 6 – 7 knots. Perfect sailing conditions. And that was it really for the next 30 hours, until the wind finally backed to the east and died. Only thirty miles to go too. So on with an engine to complete the journey. We took it slowly, not wanting to make landfall without some light in the sky and finally anchored in the bay of Porte Conte, some 42 hours after leaving Menorca. Not forgetting to raise the Italian courtesy flag, it was then time to catch up with some sleep.
