Well, what a night. The wind continued to gust up to 45kn, the seas got bigger and bigger and in the midle of cookin dinner, the gas cylinder ran out. Changing it required full wet weather gear, life jacket and clipping on, all for a cup of coffee. It was fortunate John did it, becauce when I went to bed, I heard a funny noise in the stern, but couldn't see anything. However, about 2 hours later, the autohelm stopped working and the noise stopped - the fitting had torn out of the steering quadrant. Hand steering for 6 hours while John tried to fix it was no joke in the weather we had, and I don't think John really enjoyed lying in the stern. Then we had a brilliant idea, using old crocodile clips to hold the bolt and Bingo, touch wood, keep fingers crossed, we can at least rest for a bit, or as much as possible with the conditions we've got. We certainly know where the boat leaks - like everywhere! Still, we're now warm and dry and had scrambled eggs and bacon so all is well for the time being. It looks as if we should be clear by this evening and then have a more peaceful ride but it will take time for the seas to settle I think. Only 509 nm to go!
